Figure out what kind of modeling you want to do

There are so many fields of modeling you can get into. Everything from fitness modeling, glamor modeling, Alternative modeling, Body part modeling, promotional modeling, and Catalog modeling the list goes on and on. Figure out the type that you love and fits you, so you can learn everything you need to know about those industries. Figure out how the models in that industry make money. Figure out who's hiring these types of models and figure out where these models live. You should know everything about the type of modeling you want to do. The more you know about the industry the more successful your modeling career will be.

Practice your Modeling skills

You wouldn’t try to join the NBA without shooting some hoops or go fight a war with our first shooting a gun. So you shouldn’t try to become a model without  practicing your modeling skills. After you figure out what kind of model you want to be you then need to learn how these models pose. When you go to a photoshoot you should have at least 5-10 go to poses that you can pull off without anyone telling you what to do. Look at magazines and models on instagram and try to copy their poses in the mirror. You should practice your poses often to build up muscle memory so your poses become second nature to you.

Build a strong portfolio

Every model needs a portfolio. It's best to have a printed one and a digital one that you can access very easily.  When building your portfolio try to keep it updated with your strongest and most relevant looks. You should always use different photographers for your portfolio don’t stick with the same one for every look. Diversify the different styles and looks in your portfolio.

Build your social media following

In today's world attention is King. Booking jobs as a model could depend on how many people are following you on your social media platforms. So find the Platforms you're the best at and build up a following.  Engage with your audience and know your stats in and out so when it's time to book a with a company you will know exactly what you can offer them (as far as traffic and feedback) and you can sit taller at the negotiation table.

Show up on time

Being late in this industry will cost you money and everyone you work with money. Companies book time slots at studios and pay photographers by the hour to shoot campaigns. If you show up an hour late to a 2 hour shoot that company just lost half their investment they put into that campaign because you don't know how to use a watch. Most companies won't hire you again if you consistently show up late to shoots and appointments. Companies in the same industry usually communicate with each other and your name will be tarnished if you can’t show up and do what you need to do at a photoshoot. So just come 30 mins early, problem solved!

Network

You gotta get out there and network. Talk to everyone, any one that is any kind of importance in your area should know who you are. You should be familiar with all the photographers, MUAs, Studio owners, stylists in your area. That way you'll be on the top of the list of people they will call if a job pops up. You should definitely network with people that work at the companies you want to model for. Figure out whos who and who you need to talk to in order to book a job with them. Networking is probably the number one thing you need to do to make a successful modeling career for yourself.

Keep up your appearance

Hit the gym, shave your legs, and pop some pimples. If you want the part you got to look the part. You need to keep up your appearance if you want to win in the modeling game. You can't be out here catfishing everyone. You have to at least look like what you have in your portfolio. And if the job calls for you to be an out of shape hairy person with pimples so be it, but you got to stay on top of your look.

Find a modeling agency that fits you and your brand.

Not all but Most models need an agency to help them find work. Research the top modeling agencies and find a few who seem legitimate and who represent the type of model you wish to become. Watch out for the scams!

Go where the work is

If you live in Wyoming and you're reading this and want to make it big it's time to move. You have to go where the work is. Most of the Good modeling gigs are in California, New York and Florida. Not to say you can make something shake in Wyoming because with the internet and social media you can do some type of modeling gigs from anywhere (Kanye West lives in Wyoming so…) but if you want to make it big time. You got to get in front of the people that are making the big moves in your industry.  You need to be able to work with the really good photographers that can bring the best out of you. You need to talk with the agents that can get you that life changing gig.

What you have to do is figure out what's going on in your area and how far is it gonna take you.  If there's not much going on it's time to move!

Study the models that already made it

Modeling is not a new kind of job, no need to reinvent the wheel. There are successful models everywhere. If you want to make it to the top, copy what the successful models in your industry are doing. Social media gives you access to everyone's life. You can see what type of shoot other models are taking and what photographers other models are using. Which MUA is making what models look good or bad.
